The second season of Re:Zero to Start a New World Life (hereinafter referred to as "Re:ZERO") is set to air in the summer of 2020, and for those who haven't seen it yet, there was a new edited version of the first season aired prior to the second season.
These are the four points of interest I will start with.
- Re:ZERO Information
- What kind of novel is it based on?
- Who directed the second season?
- What about the theme song for the second season?

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World Production Committee
Re:ZERO was a runner-up to the Narou anime
If you look back over the past two years, you'll see that there are anime works that originated from Shosetsuka ni Narou, which are broadcasted at least twice in one season. However, if you look back carefully, it's a genre that cannot be discussed without Re:ZERO, which I'm going to introduce here.
First of all, I would like to briefly introduce what kind of work Re:ZERO is. It was started in 2012 by Tatsuhei Nagatsuki and has been serialized for 7 years in Shosetsuka ni Narou.
There have been 23 volumes of the main story, 5 volumes of short stories, and 4 volumes of the outer story that have been published in book form so far.

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World 1
Two years after the start of the series, in 2014, there was also a comic version of the series. However, since it's a monthly newspaper series, it's currently being released as books, up to the point where it was made into an anime in the first season. There are 17 volumes from chapter 1 to 3, so it will be more fun if you check those out as well!
You can read the Re:ZERO manga here.

I'm going to talk a little bit about the impact of Re:ZERO on the Narou anime here!
Prior to Re:ZERO, Log Horizon was aired in 2013 and 2014 in two installments, but at that time it didn't see the explosion of popularity that it does now. Then, in 2016 when Re:ZERO aired, the elements of following items are new to the "other world" in anime.
・The character has been reincarnated in another world and it doesn't have the ability to cheat someone else.
・The heroine is super attractive.
・No matter how many times the characters try things, they are still not quite what they want to be.
Also, thanks to the efforts of the staff, for better or worse it became a hot topic in the blink of an eye, and two new theatrical versions have been produced. This time the second season will be broadcasted.
This anime led to an increase in the number of Narou works being made into anime since 2017. The content is not limited to adventure stories, but has expanded to include gourmet foods, gags, and robots, which were previously out of the scope of interest.
If you are interested in the wide variety of narrative genres, please click here!
It was one of the first works that made Narou style popular as a genre of anime, so it is the anime that people who have recently discovered Narou style should definitely watch.
The director of Re:ZERO 2nd season continues to be Watanabe Seiji
The production staff for Re:ZERO has been announced, and the director is Seiji Watanabe, who has been in charge of the series since the first season. I've never introduced him before, so let's get to know him now!
He was in charge of the direction, storyboarding, and original drawings for the 2006 broadcast of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Kannagi and Comic Girls. Sessha Gorou has worked on quite a few works under a different name, and there were some memorable episodes that made me appreciate him once again.
As a director, he has worked on works ranging from Wakaba Girl broadcasted in 2015 to the first season of Re:ZERO and Granbelm.
If you are interested in the anime that Seiji Watanabe worked on, please check this out.
The director himself said that it was difficult to make the work during the first season because of the aspect of depicting the same scene over and over again by adding or negating the ability to return to death. In the end, it's not an exaggeration to say that it was the best anime because of the direction and the repetition of the content that kept the audience from getting bored of it.
I'm sure the bar is set much higher for the second season, which is based on the first season, but I can't wait for it to start airing!
What is the theme song for the second season of Re:ZERO?
The theme song for the second season of Re:ZERO has been announced!
ED "Memento" by nonoc
These are the two groups that will be in charge of the theme song of the show.
This episode will be split into two parts: the summer of 2020 and the winter of 2021. Konomi Suzuki will be in charge of the summer of 2020 theme song. The first period's first season song, Redo, brought a lot of excitement to the story, so there's a lot of hope for this season's song, Realize.
On the other hand, nonoc, who is in charge of the ED, has been consecutively in charge of singing the theme songs for two movies. Therefore, he's become a familiar face for the theme song of the series.
I am sure you'll be curious to hear what kind of song he's going to sing for the ED of the first TV series, right?
The following is my prediction before the announcement, so if you're curious about it, you can read it here.↓
The theme song for the second season hasn't been announced yet, but I'm going to look back at the theme song for the first season and try to predict it.
OP "Redo" by Konomi Suzuki
ED "STYX HELIX" by MYTH&ROID
OP "Paradisus-Paradoxum" by MYTH&ROID
ED "Stay Alive" by Emilia (CV: Takahashi Rie)
When I look back on it like this, I see that MYTH&ROID, that is now a representative of the theme song for Re:ZERO, sang two songs. Also Konomi Suzuki who sings the anime theme songs, and Rie Takahashi, who has sung several theme songs for character songs are here for this anime.
If you want to know more about MYTH&ROID, Konomi Suzuki and Rie Takahashi, please click here!
As for MYTH&ROID, they were in charge of an indispensable insert song for the story, so there is a high possibility that they will be in charge of the theme song in the 2nd period as well.
As for Rie Takahashi, she has been in charge of many anime theme songs in the past 4 years and more than anything else. She plays the heroine of Re:ZERO, so I'm guessing that she will be in charge of the ED of the show as well.
